Spanish Unions Announce General Strike Over Housing Crisis Ahead of Snap Election

In a significant move reflecting growing public discontent, Spain's prominent trade unions have announced a nationwide general strike scheduled for November 11. This industrial action is a direct response to the escalating housing crisis gripping the nation, which has become a focal point in the upcoming snap election. The decision by the Workers' General Union (UGT) and Workers' Commissions (CCOO) marks a rare display of unified labor action, being the first general strike jointly backed by these two major unions in 14 years.

The core of the dispute revolves around the increasing unaffordability of housing, with rents consuming a disproportionate amount of income. Valeria Racu, a spokesperson for the Madrid Tenants’ Union, highlighted this concern, stating that rising housing costs negate any gains from minimum wage increases. Data from the Bank of Spain indicates a deficit of approximately 750,000 homes, projected to exceed one million by 2028. Furthermore, the Youth Council of Spain reveals that the average monthly rent of 1,176 euros effectively consumes nearly all of an average young person's salary.

The call for a strike follows a period of widespread protests ignited by the eviction of Maria del Carmen Abascal, an 87-year-old woman known affectionately as Maricarmen. Her story became a symbol of the housing crisis after an international investment fund purchased her building and drastically increased her rent, seemingly to convert the property into lucrative tourist accommodations. The Madrid Tenants Union responded by organizing large-scale demonstrations and encampments, first in Madrid's Puerta del Sol square and subsequently spreading to numerous other cities across Spain.

Adding to the political pressure, the government's recent failure to enact emergency measures to address the housing crisis prompted Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to call an early election for November 29. With opinion polls consistently placing him behind conservative Popular Party leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo, Sanchez faces a challenging political landscape. Feijoo's previous attempt to form a government after the 2023 general election was unsuccessful, and current projections suggest he will likely require support from the far-right Vox party to secure a governing majority.

This nationwide strike underscores the deep-seated societal frustration with housing policies and the broader economic pressures faced by ordinary citizens. It serves as a powerful reminder to political leaders that the issue of housing affordability demands urgent and comprehensive solutions, especially as the country heads towards a pivotal election.
