Publisher Ends Ties with Author Over AI Usage in Novel

A prominent Canadian publisher has ended its collaboration with best-selling Haitian-Canadian author Thelyson Orelien, citing the confirmed use of artificial intelligence in his acclaimed novel, “It Was Either That or Die.” This decision by Boreal comes after an internal inquiry revealed evidence of AI assistance in the writing process, a development that challenges traditional notions of literary authorship and has ignited considerable debate within the literary community. The author's initial denials and the publisher's prior support highlight the evolving complexities surrounding AI's role in creative endeavors.

Boreal announced its separation from the writer, a move prompted by new information gathered during an investigation into allegations of AI integration in Orelien’s work. The publisher stated on Wednesday that, despite earlier standing by the 38-year-old author following initial accusations in September, subsequent findings confirmed the presence of AI elements. This revelation marks a significant moment, raising questions about authenticity and integrity in modern literature.

The publisher acknowledged the difficulty in precisely determining the extent of AI's contribution to the novel, conceding that a definitive answer might remain elusive. To ascertain the truth, Boreal meticulously collected all available working drafts of the novel and engaged an independent third party to analyze the various versions. This comprehensive examination, concluded recently, unveiled "traces of AI tags in the metadata of certain documents," providing tangible evidence of artificial intelligence involvement.

Prior to this definitive conclusion, Boreal had actively sought Orelien's cooperation in gathering information to refute the allegations and demonstrate his innocence. However, these efforts proved inconclusive, with Orelien ultimately declining to provide further details. This lack of full cooperation likely contributed to the publisher's decision to sever ties. Adding to the controversy, France's esteemed Goncourt literary prize had already removed “C’etait ca ou mourir” (the novel’s original French title) from its shortlist after AI detection tools, such as Pangram, indicated a 100 percent probability of computer-generated text.

Despite the mounting evidence and the publisher’s stance, Orelien has steadfastly maintained his position. He previously characterized the accusations as “slander and heresy,” affirming that while he used research tools, particularly for foreign idioms, “not a single sentence in this book was created by a machine.” In a recent interview with the French newspaper Liberation, he reiterated his use of AI during the “creative process” for “historical research.” He also noted that he began writing the book in late 2017, predating the widespread availability of advanced AI services like ChatGPT. When the initial allegations surfaced, Orelien suggested that the scrutiny might be rooted in racism.

The unfolding events surrounding Thelyson Orelien's novel underscore a critical juncture in the publishing industry, where the boundaries of authorship are being redefined by technological advancements. The confirmed use of artificial intelligence in the creation of a best-selling work has led to the author's separation from his publisher and sparked broader discussions about authenticity, ethical considerations, and the future role of AI in creative writing. This case serves as a poignant reminder of the evolving landscape authors and publishers navigate in the digital age, where the line between human creativity and machine assistance is becoming increasingly blurred.
